Last October, I had the opportunity to attend the AIGA conference in Las Vegas, where one of the main topics was diversity and inclusion in Design.
Now, at this point, I was already pretty confident in my idea (Vocal Type Co.), after being inspired and contact with Ms. Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller, but I need some sort of reassurance from other professionals as well. Even if it was just one other person. I didn't get any of that. I got blank stares, and you need to do more research, I don't understand your idea, contact me and we'll discuss it further without response, and so on.
I was disappointed as you'd expect. However, one person asked me to contact this guy named Maurice Cherry, who I already heard of because his presentation titled "Where are the Black Designers," was the first thing I found in regards to the demographics of the design industry.
I went to his website to run my idea by him, until I saw all of the things he was involved in (companies to run, competitions to judge, conferences to host, etc.), and decided to take my chances.
Then, all of a sudden, to my surprise, I get an email from Maurice sometime in March. And he wants to collaborate on....(you'll find out later). And we speak, and he invites to be on his podcast called Revision Path.
I'm trying really hard to keep my cool at this point, but I'm doing back and front flips inside.
So here it is ladies and gentlemen, the podcast interview with me, Tré Seals and Maurice Cherry. Hope you enjoy it.
